内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 A Fable (1954) is one of the least appreciated of Faulkner’s works, even though Faulkner himself called it“ my magnum o." Remarkably few attempts have been made to clarify the narrative technique of the novel, and even some inclusive studies dealing keenly with the novel’s form have been limited to stylistic considerations.
The purpose of this paper is, then, to clarify the distinctive characteristics of Faulkner’s narrative technique in A Fable. Many critics argue that the novel is not worthy of serious consideration in regard to its narrative technique because it features few modernistic approaches, such as interior monologue and the stream-of-consciousness style with a first-person narrator.
Indeed, the third-person narrator dominates the narrative discourse of the novel. In my opinion, however, this third-person narrator is different from the traditional and conventional one. Faulkner creates this unique narrator elaborately as a means to express the theme of the novel. There is an urgent need to examine the functions of this third-person narrator and how this narrative style is related to the theme.
A comparison between the three-legged horse story in Chapter 6 of A Fable and “Old Man" in The Wild Palms (1939) provides a starting point, as both share domination by a third-person narrator and serve as countermelodies against the main melody of two novels treating the fictitiousness of fiction. A comparison of the horse story with Notes on a Horsethief is also helpful in determining the distinctive characteristics of the narrator in the horse story, as both narrators differ slightly with differences in narrative structure. The horse story has a more intricate structure than Notes ,which was rewritten as part of the horse story in A Fable after being published as a book in 1951.
Chapter 1 surveys the narrative structures of the three stories to highlight the characteristics of the third-person narrator in the horse story. Chapter 2 details how the narrator operates in connection with the novel’s theme by collating Notes with the horse story. These examinations help to answer the almost unquestioned question of Faulkner’s unique narrative technique in A Fable.
